Fourth

On the shore dimly seen through the mists of the deep,
Where the foe’s haughty host in dread silence reposes,
What is that which the breeze, o’er the towering steep,
As it fitfully blows, half conceals, half discloses?
Now it catches the gleam of the morning’s first beam,
In full glory reflected now shines in the stream:
’Tis the star-spangled banner, O! long may it wave
O’er the land of the free and the home of the brave.

O! thus be it ever, when freemen shall stand
Between their loved home and the war’s desolation.
Blest with vict’ry and peace, may the Heav’n rescued land
Praise the Power that hath made and preserved us a nation!
Then conquer we must, when our cause it is just,
And this be our motto: “In God is our trust;”
And the star-spangled banner in triumph shall wave
O’er the land of the free and the home of the brave!

(vs 2 and 4)

I sang The Star-Spangled Banner at church on Sunday.
And I am determined to sing each verse of that great poem, loudly, each July 4th--
to remind myself of the grand history of it all and the booming future if we make it.

Happy Independence Day friends. Hope yours was great.

  1. I always belt out the Star Spangled Banner at church. In fact, it's probably my favorite part of the Fourth of July but my ward didn't sing it! I was so disappointed. I am hoping maybe the 24th?

And I can't believe I haven't replied to your email! I am doing it right now.

  3. I went up to the Spoken Word on Sunday and watched the Mormon Tabernacle Choir sing this... I cried. Have you ever listened to the lyrics in Battle Hymn of the Republic?

"As He died to make men holy, let us die to make men free"

    -cried again.

I love the 4th. I hope yours was lovely too!
